Safety is essential in construction projects, starting with an efficient approach to excavation. At telecom operator VOO, plan request processing for cables and pipelines (KLIP and KLIM-CICC) is now automated, thanks to the secure digital platform ‘Marlin Save Below.’
Accurate information to prevent damage
Preventing damage during excavation requires reliable information about underground infrastructure. For telecom operators, this means sharing network data accurately with contractors and engineering firms.
However, responding to plan requests is often time-consuming. “This manual process consumed a lot of our employees' time and increased the risk of errors,” explains Jean-Christophe Rase, Lead IT Application Manager at VOO.
The digital solution: Marlin Save Below
To optimize this process, VOO adopted a secure digital solution. “Our search led us to GIM and their platform, ‘Marlin Save Below,’ specifically designed for plan requests. Their GIS expertise and the FME data integration platform were decisive factors,” says Jean-Christophe Rase.
Secured data for underground infrastructure
Marlin Save Below automates the processing of plan requests via the KLIM-CICC portal in Brussels and Wallonia (and via KLIP in Flanders). This cutting-edge platform, built on a database of over two million requests, leverages modern technology and adheres to all regional standards.
“With this solution, we’ve found a secure and automated way to process information about underground infrastructure, fully compliant with regulations in Wallonia and the rest of Belgium.”
Automated processes for increased efficiency
Thanks to Marlin Save Below, VOO benefits from secure and efficient plan request processing for underground excavations. “The automated process is now indispensable for us. Since implementation, our teams focus entirely on their core tasks instead of time-consuming administrative work. In short: efficiency, stability, and sustainability,” emphasizes Jean-Christophe Rase.
User-friendly interface and outstanding support
The platform integrates seamlessly with VOO’s IT infrastructure, utilizing up-to-date data. Jean-Christophe Rase also highlights other advantages: “Our teams work with an optimized and user-friendly interface. Additionally, the support is excellent and highly responsive to our questions.”
Future-ready
To prepare for the future, GIM developed a more flexible approach that enables easy conversion of plans from PDF files into vector data. This prepares VOO for the upcoming KLIP and KLIM specifications in IMKL/IMCC 3.0 format, set to launch in Q3 2025.
Fast and tailored implementation
As an expert in geographic information, GIM treats every request as a unique project. Jean-Christophe Rase confirms: “The analysis of our needs, implementation, and platform launch were completed within four months. The planning was carefully aligned with our business requirements. On my satisfaction scale, I’d give it a solid 9 out of 10.”
