VMM accelerates its air quality policy with a smart mapping application

Improving air quality is a priority for cities and municipalities. But how can you quickly gain actionable insights from complex datasets? To tackle this, VMM set out to find a solution that provides local authorities with a powerful yet user-friendly tool. The result: an innovative mapping application that simplifies and speeds up data analysis.

The challenge: fragmented data slowing down local action

How can you make meaningful progress on air quality without getting lost in scattered datasets? The Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) found that while local governments had access to the right data, they struggled to analyse it in a structured way and draw clear conclusions.

“We lacked a central and accessible solution. As a result, decision-makers were wasting valuable time trying to make sense of complex data,” explains Maarten Peeters, coordinator of the Samen voor zuivere lucht programme at VMM.

The solution: an intuitive mapping tool as a strategic enabler

In collaboration with Cegeka, GIM developed an interactive mapping application that visualises air quality data in a clear and intuitive way.
Built on Geoblox, GIM’s high-performance framework, the solution includes tailor-made features such as data filtering, trend detection and correlation insights — all designed to support effective analysis.
A key advantage: VMM can now update datasets and configure the tool independently, without relying on external developers.

The result: faster insights, more targeted local policies

Thanks to this local air quality screening tool, municipalities can now identify hotspots and define their priorities — in just half a day.
Data is displayed dynamically and visually, enabling quick interpretation of the impact of different sectors and emission sources.
Collaboration also becomes easier: analyses can be shared, exported, and reused at any time to support informed, collective decision-making.

“This smart geospatial solution enables VMM to place air quality at the heart of its strategy — without forcing policymakers to wade through a fog of data. The collaboration with GIM and Cegeka was smooth, pragmatic and effective.”
Maarten Peeters, coordinator of the Together for Clean Air (Samen voor zuivere lucht) programme, VMM
