According to the European directive dated 25 June 2002 on the assessment and management of environmental noise, member states must produce noise maps for any metropolitan areas with more than 100,000 inhabitants. In addition, those maps must be approved by the European Commission. There are three metropolitan areas in Flanders, namely Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges.
The challenge
Noise maps were submitted for Antwerp and Ghent back in 2010. When those existing maps needed to be updated and also some derived data on exposure to noise needed to be integrated, the Flemish government commissioned GIM to make the necessary preparations for importing the data using IMMI noise mapping software.
The solution
GIM performed the update using the latest population data and added new data: data from the Port of Antwerp and Deurne airport as well as data from the Flemish noise maps for principal roads and railways. Finally, GIM transformed the output into noise contours.
The result
As a result of GIM's preparation of the data for import, IMMI software can now be used to calculate up-to-date noise maps for the Ghent and Antwerp metropolitan areas, including derived data on exposure.
